The arch itself was designed by John Nash as a state entrance to Buckingham Palace and moved here, to the north-east corner of Hyde Park, in 1851. It now gives its name to the busy junction around it and to the southern end of Edgware Road, a short walk from Speakers' Corner.
Hotels gather here along the top of Park Lane, down Edgware Road and in the streets behind Oxford Street, with apartment buildings in the blocks between them. The area straddles two postcodes, W1H on the Marylebone side and W2 towards the Hyde Park Estate, and we visit both.
